Chapter Eighteen

“Grandin,” a man said, approaching. “The lady asked you to move.” The taller man, Grandin, raised his head and took a step back but kept his gaze locked on Chin.

“I’m Bucky,” the newcomer said, holding out his hand. He was a short, stocky man with curly black hair and a crooked nose. “I hope these three aren’t bothering you.”

“We were just getting acquainted,” Grandin said, refusing to look at Bucky.

“Are you in charge of these men?” Chin asked.

Bucky tilted his head. “First mate of the ship. But they listen to me. Don’t get hired back if they don’t.”

The two shorter men took the hint and casually wandered away. Grandin scowled at Bucky for a moment before nodding his head once and following his buddies.

“I hope they’re not going to cause trouble,” Chin said, watching the three walk in the direction of the mining crew camp.

Bucky also watched the men. “Me, too,” he muttered. He turned to Chin. “A little talk and they’ll fall in line. They won’t bother you again.” He put his hand to his head and made the motion of tipping an imaginary hat. “Good day.” He hurried after the men.

The Brennen Corp was the first round of people from the orbiting ships. The area around Cryslin was growing crowded.

When Chin entered the habitat she noticed Hans and Sally, heads together, focused on his monitor so she zig-zagged her way over to them. Sally looked up with a smile but Hans was completely focused on the monitor. Chin stepped around the makeshift desk so that she could see what held his interest.

A window taking up about a quarter of the screen showed a live shot of the ruins, zoomed in to a section of wall laying in rubble near a partial building. Two more windows were open, both showing the raised markings carved into the stone. One window showed the actual rock and one window showed a transcribed image of the markings.

“Can you read them?” Chin asked.

Hans shook his head. “Almost.”

“Almost?” Chin asked in surprise.

“We haven’t found a new actual symbol in a while,” Sally explained. “If we have the complete alphabet the computer program should be able to decipher them, given time.”

“Good work,” Chin said, impressed. “How did you manage to get all the images?”

Hans looked up from the screen. “I didn’t go inside, if that’s what you mean.”

“We took a drone out,” Sally said, glancing sharply at Hans. “A few passes and we got the whole area scanned.”

“Good luck,” Chin said. As interesting as their work was, she had higher priority tasks that needed to be done, starting with discussing with John the updates she had made to the Doran land contract. She did not care if they visited the ruins. It was John and the mayor who were pushing against any exploring within the ruins.

More people arrived. Despite the speedy construction being done there the population of Cryslin was growing faster than buildings could be put up.

The first signs of trouble came when some of the Brennen Corp people found out about the ruins and went on their own to investigate.
